Introducing Our Fellows:

Dr. Luís Paulo Rodrigues Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo, Portugal

"From Local Classrooms to Global Frameworks
in Motor Development"

I-MDRC highlights Dr. Luís Paulo Rodrigues, Full Professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo, Portugal, and a Founding Member of the I-MDRC.

Dr. Rodrigues’s work begins with a central question: How can we design developmentally appropriate environments that support every child’s ability to move, grow, and thrive?

Across a career that bridges motor development, physical fitness, growth, and motor competence, Dr. Rodrigues has consistently sought answers grounded in both rigorous evidence and practical application. His research emphasizes that movement is not simply a matter of physical performance; it is a reflection of opportunity, context, and care.

His work has been deeply embedded in school-based interventions and inclusive programming, including the implementation of low-cost, developmentally targeted motor skill interventions in Portuguese primary schools. These initiatives have demonstrated measurable gains in children's movement proficiency, often with just one extra hour of instruction per week; proof that small changes in structure can yield large gains in competence and confidence.

Dr. Rodrigues has also been instrumental in adapting motor assessment tools for children with diverse needs, including those with autism spectrum disorders. His commitment to accessibility and early identification continues to shape how educators and clinicians can meaningfully assess and support motor development in everyday settings.

Just as notable is his commitment to mentorship and training. Over the years, Dr. Rodrigues has helped guide future scholars through doctoral and master’s research, and he continues to serve as a leader in his institution, as Pro-President at the Polytechnic Institute, and as a senior member of SPRINT, Portugal’s national research center for sport, physical activity, and health.

At the heart of his work is a belief that movement isn’t just an outcome, it’s a pathway. One that leads not only to health, but to agency, identity, and equity.

We are proud to spotlight Dr. Rodrigues this month and recognize the impact he continues to make, not just through his research, but through the lives and learning environments he helps shape.
